Safety nets are for people who need them, not for people who find them to be suitable alternatives to contributing.

If they are (present tense) contributing to society, they don't need (again and importantly, present tense) a safety net, do they? A man or a woman who has (past tense) contributed to society, but who ended up homeless... is the safety net (present tense) not for them, either? If not, then what is the point of the safety net, at all?

(And just so we don't waste each other's time: No, I do not, debating-wise, align with those who liken your arguments to euthanizing the poor. I recognize that that is not your position.)

The beggars are a different thing entirely. They don't need your handouts at all.

There used to be a woman who begged every day on the Jackson bridge next to Union Station.Turns out she made a fortune and loved in a nice condo in the Loop.

Remember one guy in Germany that made quit a lot through begging: he was well dressed and simply hanged around the pay machines of various parking lots and said he didn't have change with him and asked for coins. Germans gave willingly coins for this "fellow car owner in distress". I believe that a lot of people would do that, who otherwise would not give to some sitting on the street with a cardboard sign.

The willingness to contribute is sufficient. Like people on unemployment who have to demonstrate they’re looking for work while collecting benefits. If you’re able, willing, and trying, I’m satisfied.

Homeless residents brag about makeshift 'mansion' near Seattle's famed Space Needle

Residents of the mega tent "mansion" homeless encampment near Seattle's famed Space Needle are bragging about the practicality of their new digs, taunting local politicians: "If you can live on the street and not pay rent, then why would you pay rent?" (Ha-ha guys, you sure told us. We’re the stupid fucks paying rent and taxes when we could be jobless and constructing trash mansions) ...

... "It is a form of protest," Melissa Burns, one of the "mansion" dwellers, told Q13 News. "We're staking a claim. We're refusing to cower in our tents." (How come you guys never protest by getting a job, or doing anything for anyone else? You always protest by being more self centered and demanding) ...

... A city spokesperson told Q13 News officials have inspected the site, and will continue to monitor and evaluate it. Mental health teams are also working with Seattle officials to figure out if there’s any way to convince the people living in the camp to go somewhere else. (Oh, thank god, mental health teams have been sent to reason with the people who have already made their reasoning clear. Money well spent)

Spokesman Will Lemke added the city has no immediate plans to remove the camp, but that may change in the future if there is a problem or safety concern. (I can’t replace a weathered deck without inspections, permits, bonded contractors, and land surveys - but the city is “monitoring” a trash mansion built next to the largest tourist monument in Washington. This is your state on Democrats, folks)

But it’s hard to get that ball rolling because as soon as you say anything about the capable homeless folks start hammering you with canards about sick kids and disabled vets.

Most of the homeless veterans also have mental illnesses.

We just need safe and humane mental health institutions.

Most of the homeless that you notice (the street people, basically) have various drug problems and mental illnesses.

A lot of the homeless you actually don't notice are fathers who had their homes taken from them by the family court and most of their paychecks garnished. They are also people who have jobs but the wages are so low it's cheaper for them to live out of a van and save up money to buy some property in the future. Then there are people who just want to be homeless.

You can fix a lot of this by putting the mentally ill in institutions, closing the borders, sending back the visa workers, and shutting down the family court systems. Just doing that would probably take more than half the homeless off the streets either by alleviating the economic or legal injustices, or by putting people who can't care for themselves in adequate institutions.

I’m down for that. Let’s seize the funding for tent city initiatives, free clean needle clinics, public bike-share programs, and billions of dollars in illegal light rail schemes and build/staff some mental health facilities.

I’m sure the Dems will get right on that instead of trying to pass the 198th property tax for progressive bullshit this month.
