Yes. I was more "ear to the ground," than "go get 'em," but the risk paid off far more than not. Moving for money was one of my best decisions. It brought me all else, just by being responsible for me and two cats.Smitty-48 wrote:I mean, my neighbor two doors down just offered me a job for a $100,000/year, but I'd have to go buttfuck middle of nowhere Alberta to work for him, which, not up for that at this juncture, but if I needed the money, I would go.
Minimum Wage just went up to $11.50 in Washington State. The price of milk is $2.68 a Gallon.

If you want to play that game, I worked on the flight line for years, 12-18 hours per day, with only a weekend off every two weeks. Okie gets challenged to a duel about once per month, so Smitty has some catching-up to do.

He wants to come down into the trenches and work some long shifts with little pay, I'd be up for the challenge. See who taps first. Get two jobs, walk 3 miles a day and 5 each way on the weekends, which are Tuesdays and Thursdays. All of it unrewarding just so I can save up enough to go to school. I'm out here surviving, while he's in his comfy armchair drinking his scotch.
Bring it.
A software engineer often has to put in enormous hours to meet various project deadlines. The only time I worked more hours than I did as an engineer was in the military. Working service jobs before the military? Please. Professionals put far more time and effort into their careers than the average laborer. It's not even close. Because you are paid by the hour, your weekly working hours are highly regulated and limited. If you do go over 40 hours, you get time and a half pay. The professional man is expected to put in probably far more hours than you and he doesn't get extra pay for working through the weekends. He has responsibilities too.
I don't think you have quite as easy as you think. The pay might be shitty, but hard? Probably not.
I am not saying you got a great deal either. But come on. Go enlist in the Army before you get too old if you don't like this.

Improve yourself, improve our conditions, there's no reason to take 11.50/hour in this economy, unless you're semi retarded fucking invalid.
I work for a living. Of course you don't respect hard work, how long since you had to do some real hard work?
Most of this country don't respect a someone putting in hard work. Who cares where it is, or how much that person makes, if they're working hard that should afford respect, instead bitches be like "aww you work minimum wage, ain't that cute." Fuckin right, I'm out here trying to survive. Respect that. I put in my time. Pay my bills, in full and on time. What the problem is?
That's what's wrong with this country nowadays, people don't respect hard work.

Goes to show how much you know about the bottom. No one gets overtime down here. Want to go over 40? If you want to work more than 40 hours every single week, become the average professional, dude. I don't think you realize how nice you got it in terms of hours. You probably will get lit the fuck up for this in the morning by a lot of grumpy office workers in the forum who work closer to 60 hours and more per week.

$11.50/hour, for forty hours, is only $460/week. I board dogs here in my house, not even as a job, just as a paid favour to people who don't want to kennel their dogs, and it generates $1750/week, without do any real work at all.

Before I enlisted as a young buck, I was working a raw bar in Florida for a while. Was the pay shit? Yep. But I worked forty hours per week, no more. After we closed up, we'd smoke some bowls and maybe I would go bang a waitress down by the beach. You didn't need that much money. In hindsight, trying to escape that was not the wisest move. I was trapped on the flight line working 60+ hours per week. Before I shipped out to Idaho, one of my instructor told me I'd love it there because there's a beautiful woman behind every tree. I didn't get the joke until I arrived.

Guys, I don't care what you think about where I am in life. I don't need your advice about my career or my prospects.
Someone says "jobs that would break a man like you, make no mistake" they're going to get a reaction. That's the kind of thing you don't say to a person on anything other than the internet, because it's going to get a reaction.
That's the safety of the internet, you can say all the shit you want, and never have to back it up.
You keep disrespecting me but guess what? Little I can do about it, being that it's just the internet.

There are some great jobs in places like Alaska. Hard work that pays a lot.

Well, you know, I've done plenty of time at a coal face which the likes of you could not even get to, because you wouldn't be able to keep up, you chubby little cream puff, but at the same time, as me ol' pappy used to say when he was coaching hockey, don't try harder, try easier, the name of the game is revenue streams, it's not about banging your head against the wall per se, I'd certainly be ready to go to coal face again for Her Majesty, but so long as I have the revenue streams to support my lifestyle, I'd rather just work for myself, I am after all, a very good boss, so I like working for me, that's the way to go, ol' beanjediuser598 wrote:Words all words.Smitty-48 wrote:Why don't you focus some of that pent up rage at finding a better job than one pays 11.50/hour, and then maybe you wouldn't feel the need to whine like a little bitch, and lash out at random Canadians on the internet who are just shooting the breeze, little fella.jediuser598 wrote:This is what sucks about the internet, someone pulls my man card, we can't go at it.
