I had a little mix and pastry left over so I made a second smaller pie which was thinner and it was better so that checks out. I'll try evap milk next time instead of cream as most of the recipes I just looked at used it. More than half of them used Libby's puree as well but as a chef I'm generally opposed to using processed ingredients plus I don't think it's readily available in the UK. The reason given was a dryer mix but straining overnight in a cheese cloth would achieve this. A few of the recipes added ginger but most were just cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. One or two added vanilla.
Anyway I'm going to try again taking everyone's advice into account.

I think the last time I used cloves was boiling them with cinnamon to make the house smell nice. :)

They are good for toothache too but I've heard dentists say they burn the gums.
