but there aren't any medical records to say what it was that killed those in the America's. We're just making guesses based on records from people who likely barely understood bacterial or viral contagions, if they understood them at all.

We had accounts from the Spanish missions that did write down what happen. Plus, in the northern region, we had accounts of Natives dying from diseases from Europe. The thing is that these diseases were in Europe and Asia for generations, which lead to some to get some kind of immunity for the locals. It didn't make them 100% immune to the diseases but getting some didn't necessary meant death. Plus, they had generations of knowledge of how to deal with the diseases while the Native Americans didn't have any idea how to handle the diseases.
