I've got some issues I need to deal with and I'm working on combining technologies to fix a number of them at once.
Needs
1. a Fence along one side of my property
2. a wind break on the side I need the fence
3. I have sandy gravelly soils that are not very fertile.

Resources
1. Existing unused irrigation ditch, irrigation was cut off 25 years ago through a water rights claim
2. Local supply of beetle killed trees - should be able to get a truck load cheap
3. Good well with plenty of good water

I'm looking at combining Hugelcultur, Swale and Berm Water tech and eventually a hedge row.

Swale and Berm Tech

Then I am going to plant a variety of Nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs on top of the Hugelkultur mound. In organic material, with a buried irrigation line.

Be careful with that beetle wood though. Might infest the new trees.

Rather startling interview with a survivor of the Bosnian war.

The Slavs wage war brutally.

Good article, total societal breakdown. Has it changed your plans ?

There's a video game about it.

If want to be scared, check this out, far worse than a Carrington Event, probably Super Volcanos....... the only non man made thing on its scale would be a planet ending meteor strike.

Earth’s Magnetic Poles Show Signs They’re About to Flip—Exposing Humans to Radiation and Planet-Wide Blackouts
That devastation could arrive through multiple avenues. The combination of powerful space particles, like unfiltered solar rays, cosmic rays and ultraviolet B rays (the stuff your sunscreen bottle warns you about), would smash through our battered ozone layer and lead us the way of the dinosaurs.

Our infrastructure wouldn’t fare much better. Since satellite grids are linked, once radiation eats through, more will follow, causing a cascading mass blackout, among other disasters, according to Undark.

This is old news. Is there any evidence that it has caused mass extinctions in the past?
So the North pole moves a few miles every year and eventually it will end up on the otherside of the planet and the field strength varies. That's not the same as saying the magnetic feild will shut off completely and radiation will fry everything on the planet.
The death of our oceans is a much more serious situation and there's plenty of evidence that that is happening.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Yeah, not sure about the pole-flipping thing. Humans have never witnessed it, and we have no idea what the effect would be, if any, or how long the process takes. I do know it’s happened way more often than mass extinctions though.

I love that game.

It doesn’t change anything, but it does remind me that I need to get a gun at some point. I’ve been thinking about it, and how to secure it. I still don’t know that it would even be useful unless I’m going to stand guard all night, or keep it by my bed somehow.

According to NASA it may have happened multiple times since humans walked the Earth.
Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal. A reversal happens over hundreds or thousands of years, and it is not exactly a clean back flip. Magnetic fields morph and push and pull at one another, with multiple poles emerging at odd latitudes throughout the process. Scientists estimate reversals have happened at least hundreds of times over the past three billion years. And while reversals have happened more frequently in "recent" years, when dinosaurs walked Earth a reversal was more likely to happen only about every one million years.
https://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/featu ... ersal.html
Another doomsday hypothesis about a geomagnetic flip plays up fears about incoming solar activity. This suggestion mistakenly assumes that a pole reversal would momentarily leave Earth without the magnetic field that protects us from solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun. But, while Earth's magnetic field can indeed weaken and strengthen over time, there is no indication that it has ever disappeared completely. A weaker field would certainly lead to a small increase in solar radiation on Earth – as well as a beautiful display of aurora at lower latitudes - but nothing deadly. Moreover, even with a weakened magnetic field, Earth's thick atmosphere also offers protection against the sun's incoming particles.
Don't let it stop you packing your bug out bag though.... ;)

Most criminals are going to pass on you if you just have a gun, they will go on to easier targets. Just get a shotgun, plenty of good gun locks. My home defense shotguns first round is rubber pellets. Followed by a progression up to heavier loads. In my mind this does several things.

Maybe I don't have to kill anybody, even if I need to shoot them. If it's a less experienced person in my family, say my wife, she knows that first round is rubber ball. She can shoot that without having to go through the mental gymnastics of killing someone. Last, when Johnny Law comes by, I can prove my intent was to defend my castle, not kill anyone.
