Everything about the mistress and her daughters was ho hum.
If Game of Thrones was as much like The Wire as it wishes it was, that material would have been so cut.
You mention this rebel kingdom, you have to show something. It's the old saw about a gun. Somebody comes on screen with a gun, somebody better be getting shot.

One out of five, is not a trend. Existence of an exception does not disprove the rule.

Seems to be the style is more the norm than the big climactic episodes that only focus on one, maybe two, stories.

My least favorite episode in the series is still pretty damn good, so I guess I just don't know where you are coming from. For the most part, the pacing is fine.

The best part was Dorne and the Sandviper and her Daughters. Good character development AND some of the few characters that were actually written true to the books. Really captivating how they told a tale of a mother who would do anything to avenge her daughters and how Jaime and Bronn had to rescue family as well. Great tv!

I hope they wrap up Westeros stuff in the first episode, and spent the remainder of the final season in Essos.

Well that's what they figured, and then it backfired, real badly, they should have avoided the temptation entirely, waste of screen time.

But they had already cut it back dramatically from what it was in the books. My biggest problem with the Dorn thread was her irrationality of blaming the Lannisters for the death of Oberon, he volunteered for a fair fight and lost.

So? Trying to be too much like the books is GoT's biggest issue, not all the material in the books works on a TV screen. GoT hopefully learns to pick and choose better in the final six episodes, and embrace the fact that they are a TV show more often. Dorne doesn't play well on TV, trying to shoe horn it in, just because it was in the books, bad idea.

Season 7 didn't spend any time in Dorne. That was its Achilles' heel. Littlefinger was a terrible character and the way they used feminist crowd pleasing plot devices to kill him was perfect. I just wish they had spent maybe half the season in Dorne. The wine there is good, the costumes there are realistic (The Essos costumes are amazing and don't look like something out of Xena the Warrior Princess), and Essos/Dorne ratchets up the drama. It really invests you in the characters. Varys and Tirrion were boring weak characters until they went to Essos. Then, the writing improved and they got really interesting. Before that, they were 1 dimensional Social Justice caricatures, but they sure got interesting once they travelled!

I would also like to see at least 4 episodes that show the CGI dragons destroying various structures. Game of Thrones is at its best when it focuses on fantastic unrealistic things like zombies and dragons. I love this because it reminds me of the Walking Dead, a superior show full of sophisticated ideas and captivating characters like Rick! That's why I watch HBO. To see computer generated images! Keep up the good work HBO! West World Season 2 was perfection. They are really approaching Starz in terms of quality content, especially following the True Detective Season 3 lifetime movie vibe they wrapped up the season with!

Would have been tricky, needed real pro writing, since everyone of note there was gone, dead or captive. Good idea though, them Sandsnakes were hot! In fact, Kings Landing should have been in Dorn, and there would have been a whole lot less clothing worn. The Dothraki also really had the fashion thing down. I've been seriously thinking of putting little bells in my beard.

It was not a complete waste. It was a very small amount of screen time, that pays off when Cercei gets Ellaria and her daughter into the caves. The revenge scene makes no sense without the context of what happened in Dorne.
