Here's another example of someone who cannot read and/or understand and/or apply context. Why do you suppose I posted that, Okee? Eh? I didn't make it about me. Geezus you guys are ijuts sometimes.Okeefenokee wrote:
I love how Kath argues against statistical norms by trying to turn everything into a one on one personal issue...precisely the way women are statistically more inclined to gravitate towards personal interactions rather than things (statistics).
It's just so damn perfect.

Sad panda.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

That's an interesting hypothesis. I'm looking forward to the day with this PC shit blows up in our faces and gets replaced with something I like to call honesty.Heraclius wrote:
Perhaps the feeling of loneliness comes from the fact that Gen Z has had the importance of policing the way they speak and making sure no one is offended beaten into them. The only places that you can really let yourself loose and not have to worry about the repercussions of what you're saying is either online or in a close knit group of people you trust. When Gen Z is going off to college and needs to recreate that close knit group of people, they find quite a lot of their real world interaction devoted to bland conversational topics meant to not offend anyone in fear of socially isolating themselves. I doubt this is some new phenomena. You could probably survey any period of time within the last 50 years or so and find that the most isolated are going to be those at the age of being put in nursing homes and those going off to university. I do think that the ability to rely on the Internet means less people are "pushed" to go outside of their comfort zone and instead they will stay in the comfort of what is defined as "loneliness" by the survey.

Now obviously there have always been lonely people, and there are always a percentage of the population who, through chemical imbalance or whatever, are incapable of escaping it. These people have always existed and that's not what the article is about.
But if it's a new trend and we're noticing an up-tick; definitely a choice. Either out of fear of reprisal or because you can't get your head out of your device long enough to smile at a stranger - it's a choice.

You could choose not to live in a suburb, you can choose to live somewhere where your kids can walk everywhere, you can choose to find a rural community where the neighbours stay put for the most part, you can choose to police your kids technology... or disallow it entirely... ... my choices as a parent affect my kids... but they don't control my choices.
But those are a lot of choices that people didn't need to make a few generations back.
People get exhausted from having to make so many active choices... and for the most part people don't make those choices...
So you can always say.... "it's your own choice, dumbass"...
But check and see how effective that strategy is at making the situation any better...
Other than maybe making you feel better about writing off the loneliness epidemic.

I'm not writing it off as much as I'm thinking there isn't much that can be done about it. People are, en masse, losing their situational awareness, they are no longer "in the moment," and they aren't actively participating in their physical lives.DrYouth wrote:

How do you fix that? They have to wake up - there's no pill. They just have to wake up and realize there's more to life than Candy Crush.
