General Mattis can bestow honor upon a soldier by pinning a bronze star on his chest for heroism on the battlefield.

The hens on The View can cluck cluck cluck about the latest baseless allegations against Senator Franken, but they are incapable of bestowing honor. Anybody can attempt to shame another person. Only honorable persons can bestow or withhold honor.

Honor is a positive attribute that is bestowed upon or removed from another. Shame is a negative attribute.

Shame is something engaged in by the large group, especially by the weak, and is somewhat of a democratic system; honor is something engaged in only by the strong and is inherently an elitist and hierarchical system.


Really, the only time a man should feel shame is before God or, perhaps, before a moral superior. If this were the early 20th century and Padre Pio catches me about town with a whore, then yeah, I'd probably feel shame. But I always feel shame before God. Shame from women is just meaningless. You can see here how even Nick is trying to behave like a woman by shaming me into the "approved" way of talking about women. It's just pointless.

More importantly, societies based around shame are fucking horrible places to live in. Most of communism was based around social shaming. Puritan America was based around shaming.

Fuck that lifestyle with a stick. I'd rather live in an honor-based society. I am not saying that's all Big Rock Candy Mountain either. I mean.. Southland was based on honor and if a man challenged you to a dual, you had to fight. But that's infinitely preferable to the collectivism inherent in shame-based societies.

Shaming is inherently a feminine and collectivist means of control.

Honor is how individualist societies police themselves.

Honor-based societies obviously can go overboard with it and have their downsides, but shame-based societies are ALWAYS a fucking nightmare.
