From talking to soldiers, them being a soldier, and then talking to other soldiers is a shared experience, a shared back ground. They went through a lot of the same shit. They were in the same institution. Same with a Church. They look at life the same way, they try to get at grace the same way, because they study the same scripture. Their lives have the same rules, because they're either in or were a part of the same institutions.

You take a soldier like Okee, and sit him down with the two marines and sailor I know, and I bet they'd hit it off pretty quickly. I imagine they have an undying hatred for Hillary, believe in a lot of the same conservative principles, they organize their families the same way, and they have many of the same values.

These institutions shaped them. Our institutions, Grumpy, shaped us.

The difference being, Okee and soldiers like him got to keep their institutions, got to incorporate their institutions into their lives and build their lives around them, while we had to (at least I'm gathering this from what you've told me) throw ours away. Get away from ours.

For us, we couldn't pull status from our institutions, none of them were "good" enough, whereas soldiers like Okee, and my friends, could from theirs.

But that doesn't mean that good institutions that provide happiness aren't out there.

I know I'm coming at this from a Real Politik way, but it's real hard for me to see it differently because of what I observe on the daily. My friend's highest example of virtue is General Mattis. Their lowest example of virtue is Hillary Clinton. Hell, they hate her more than they do Hitler (literal quote), and one of them is Jewish. Because at least Hitler was a soldier, right?

I'm earnestly looking for happiness, with as much rationality as I can muster.

I look at other people, and they're find much of it from institutions. So I ask myself, maybe I just need to find an institution that I believe in, that looks like it does good in the world, that shares my values and then just dive into that, become part of those tribes that spawn off of that.
