At first, I thought that this thread was titled, "Alien Ant Farm". Good band.

Fair enough, but then you're not fit for command, as if you're not willing to put your children into the fire to win, you'll lose every time, and by extension, have failed to do the job right.
We have very different jobs. Safety is my mission. I do not command.
I'm retired now, I have no interest in doing the military job right anymore, it's a young man's game, once you reach my age, you can't even understand what the point was anymore.

I think I'm older than you, Smitty. :) but it's like everything else in life - there's always going to be something that needs doing and I'll probably be the one doing it. I can't imagine actual retirement. If nothing else, the family requires my work even if I didn't have paid employment (the job after the job). As long as I'm responsible for the safety of personnel, though I will be a nitpicking perfectionist about it. I would want someone else to be the same way if my kids' lives were on the line.

Well, I'm retired from being an armed agent of the state forsworn to obey orders without question, with total loyality to the unit, and kill without quarter nor remorse, but I still have my bidness on the side, revenue streams to support my lifestyle, but in terms of doing the military job, if you are no longer prepared to do it right, that's when it's time to walk away and hand it off to the next blood thirsty professional killer for the state, which apparently is you, which, not judging, go on with your bad self, just don't try to pretend that killing children is not your business, if you serve the military.

It is a dichotomy that I'm not particularly comfortable with. I'm also not comfortable with handing the job off to someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about doing the job right.

There's always somebody to take your slot, specs, big green machine rolls on without you, everybody is expendable downrange, and as soon as the two way range kicks off, the best of the best are the first to go down, in the end, it's really just a chaotic free for all of random death and destruction, competence is overrated, so long as they go over the top, that's the hard part done.

Your role is simply to deliver force to the startline, after that, it's no longer an issue of technical competence, but rather, in the grand scheme of things, the will to go on.

You just have to let go, you know, it's like when the troops hesitate, cause they're thinking about it, you have to burn that out of them, relentless conditioning, so they don't think, they don't hesitate, they just do, that's what it's all about, it's not about competence, competence will not save them, so it's better if they don't even think about it, and just learn to let go.

Bear in mind, they're already homo sapiens sapiens, they're born killers, apex predators, hyper agressive, once they're over the top, instinct will take over, the military is not about training people to kill, it's about untraining them to not kill, once you have untrained them, and you deliver them to the startline and they go over the top, that's mission accomplished, homo sapiens sapiens will take it from there, you can have faith in that.

Obey-Bond-Kill, that's the only required ingredients, everything else is just ritual, the untraining process, to unlock homo sapiens sapiens, as they were before you trained them to be civilized.

I mean depressing as in "I spent the afternoon at a wake and yet your post bummed me out" depressing. I tend to focus on the mission. People have to be fed, bills have to be paid, house has to be cleaned, bunks can't become projectiles, valves can't leak deadly gasses, etc. You are a far deeper thinker than I.
