Re: Coronavirus thread
I was always deeply suspicious of the argument that there are very many people who would intentionally work to destroy a functioning economy that benefited everyone out of rank pettiness, resentment, and malice.
Looks like I was wrong.

I don't. I'm just aware that death comes in many forms . . . and that it's a mistake to ensure your death by one method by desperately overreacting to another. The key is to find a way to avoid all forms of death as long as possible. Can't do that if you're obsessed with only addressing one avenue of death.

Not at all, that's why I qualified it with ''confirmed''.Xenophon wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 8:03 amTaking the confirmed infections as gospel, here.Montegriffo wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 6:53 amLast season's flu deaths were around 61k from almost 50 million infections in the US.
The Coronavirus has, so far, killed nearly 77k from 1.3 million confirmed infections.
You would have to multiply the confirmed cases of COVID19 by nearly 40 to make the flu as deadly as the Coronavirus.
Estimates vary as to the number of unreported cases but even at the highest estimates of 10 to 1 you still have only 13 million cases compared to 50 million flu cases. That makes it around 4 times as deadly as the flu.
To get to herd immunity you need around 70% of the country to be infected or about 230 million cases.
That means that if 77k died from 13 million cases 230m cases would result in
1,336,750 deaths.
To put that into perspective, that's half a million more than the combined loss of life of Britain and America in WWII.
Now that's a lot of assumptions and guess work but what is more certain is the comparison of the average loss of life to the flu in the UK of 8k to the 30k already lost to COVID19.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Is this to suggest that herd immunity isn't a realistic goal? Because, a reliable vaccine in the near future is also an unrealistic goal.Montegriffo wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 9:14 amNot at all, that's why I qualified it with ''confirmed''.Xenophon wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 8:03 amTaking the confirmed infections as gospel, here.Montegriffo wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 6:53 amLast season's flu deaths were around 61k from almost 50 million infections in the US.

Sure looks that way when any attempt to discuss reopening the economy is met with vitriol and accusations of wanting everyone to die.Montegriffo wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 9:23 amRank pettiness, resentment, and malice?Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 9:02 amI was always deeply suspicious of the argument that there are very many people who would intentionally work to destroy a functioning economy that benefited everyone out of .

That's not how reasonable, well-intentioned, honest people respond to discussions.
So . . . we must look for the most likely motives that drive such responses, Occam's Razor style.
