I'm not arguing about the prices, I'm saying that these neoliberal economic policies have had large effects on huge swathes of the country. You mentioned trade-offs earlier. There are huge parts of the country where industries no longer exist. Many people working in those industries are now on welfare, disability, and have various substance abuse problems, which America also pays for. Yes, we are getting cheaper goods in the bargain, but we are still eating the cost in the form of a smaller labor pool paying taxes for these folks. That is a trade off and it does cost. In fact, the cost for some of that stuff has effects into the next generation, and these costs are not as easy to determine.
The point is that tariffs don't reverse the damage you see. If you have "huge parts of the country where industries no longer exist", slapping tariffs on things doesn't reverse that. Making steel more expensive, exclusively for American companies, doesn't suddenly revitalize our steel industry. Sure, it puts *some* steel workers back to work because *some* American industries must have steel, no matter the price. But those industries that rely on steel, after suffering price hikes, reduce their productivity and lay off more workers.

If the goal is to keep the number of laid-off workers to a minimum then tariffs are the wrong way to go.

What should the response of a city that loses a a key industry be? Raising the taxes in the area just causes a death spiral and more businesses and residents to leave. How do you bring those areas back from the dead?

The mistake is looking to the city to solve the problem.
Look to your ancestry.
How did your dad, granddad, great-granddad, on down the line deal with shifting job markets, natural disasters, wars, etc?

Tenacity. Innovation. Gutting it out. Moving. Building. Investing in themselves and their family.
That's it, man. That's all there is.

What can Detroit do to revitalize Detroit?
Not a damn thing (or they would've done it by now).

But any random Detroiter has productivity, potential, and perseverance. You can go somewhere with that. You can go somewhere BIG with that, if it's your passion. That's why every 3rd-worlder and their cousin wants to come here. We're not the most benefits-friendly nation on the globe by a country mile. But this is the place where those who want to make it big, can.

In the meantime property values become more affordable and new industries might move in to take advantage of low cost of infrastructure and available workforce.
Cities reinvent themselves all the time... much like people do.
Change is the only constant when it comes down to it... but it happens awfully quickly these days....

Sure.
Cities *can* do certain things to make their area more desirable to employers - up to a point.
Almost every single one of those "things" will involve repealing batshit crazy laws.

But expecting a city to do so, or believing a city has a inherent interest in revitalizing itself, is a mistake.
Everyone *running* the city *has* a job, and a pretty good paycheck. Even in Detroit. They're not feeling the urgency that average citizens do.

Here it comes - honest to God thought police and “reducation camps” on US campus. How long till this shit becomes acceptable in corprate America!

Fuck - why is no one suing these fucking commies?

So what is bias, according to the Bias Assessment and Response Team? They define it as “actions or expressions that are motivated, at least in part, by prejudice against or hostility toward a person (or group) because of that person’s (or group’s) actual or perceived age, disability/ability status, ethnicity, gender, gender identity/expression, national origin, race, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, etc.”

Those reported for bias may be required to participate in mediation, “educational conversations,” or “resolution agreements” and may receive referrals to other offices at the school. In some cases, incidents which are deemed as possible violations of the Student Code can be forwarded to the Student Discipline System.

Is It still a re-education camp if you’re dropping four or five figures a semester for the honor of being subjected to this shit?

I’d say it’s more an expensive form of masochism.

That is probably the most dumbass, intellectually corrosive, academically obstrutive, ignorant and "newspeak-y" definition of bias I've ever come across. I know it affects more than just this discipline, but how will it be possible to discuss historical sources, which often are not just biased according to the dictionary definition, but certainly also "biased" according to the moronic newspeak definition? The academic study of history HAS to allow for the reading and academic analysis of biased sources, because those are some of the most valuable historical sources there are - giving present day people insight into the mindsets of people from the past. The same applies to sociology, anthropology and psychology. This gives me the sad on your behalves...

How are the politics of academia in Denmark? Do they have these Liberal vs. Conservative culture wars? Is traditional Danish culture from history disparaged by your elite as racist or evil?
