A lot of homeless people are already on SSI. They may not even be legit crazy, its just more free money they can sign up for.

Where do they mail the checks?
Poop-stained needle tent #307?

You think this is an IRL logistical problem?

You've been living and working around Seattle for a while now, right?

Man, I could get into some SSI stories with you, but I'd rather not ruin my evening bring up those kind of memories just now. I'm actually in a pretty decent mood.

Don't tell me they pick them up from the office every month.

... cuz then I'm going to ask how paranoid schizophrenics maintain such time awareness and strict discipline from month to month.

I know it's astounding, DB, but believe me: the third day of the month brings on 24-hour cognitive and "lets-get-it-the-fuck-done" skills that the Green Lantern would just stand and shake his head in amazement at.

Community outreach centers typically offer homeless services like mail boxes and internet labs.

That's about the most polite way that SSI fraud occurs. At least no 80-year-olds are likely being shaken down in that kind of set up.

Oh well you mean doing it the hard way. When I was on Skid Row a lot of kids just went to the right community service place and just told them they were crazy. Never ending welfare and an SSI check.

For sure, all one needs is a reliable mail drop. Once a person has a government check in hand, cashing it is about as difficult as waking up by noon, pulling on some sweats and flip-flops, and finding a ride into town.

So right there, for those people, if you want a job, you can't get a job.

Another group can get a job, but can't keep them very long. Reasons include addiction, personality disorders, mild mental illness.

Maybe they can get help through counseling and medication, they'd need the resources and the motivation. The initial problems may affect the motivation though.

I'm sure upbringing has a huge effect on whether people in the second group succeed or not. But a person doesn't control their upbringing.

So the reality is it's not simply a question of job availability, nor is it some stupid blame the rich, or blame the lazy poor dichotomy. It might be an issue without a group or entity to blame.
A good society should take care of its disabled and mentally infirmed, and even the hardliners of the forum would agree that they need assistance. I don't think that's who is mostly being referenced here. I would also reckon that most people on the forum have some relation to drug addicts or experience with them. They aren't all just mentally ill, not in the sense that they are incapable of work, so its not like everyone is just talking out of their ass. A lot of people move to the west coast, specifically to be homeless and shoot dope, that's a fact. And its not fair that children have to deal with their mess. I don't care if you do drugs, just knock of the discarding of damn diseased needles everywhere. It doesn't matter if society doesn't provide them with needle trash cans, until they decide to do so, its up to them to not throw them in the grass in public parks. I wouldn't lock anyone up for drugs, but leaving needles around is unacceptable.
