That's awesome. Did they get sent to juvie?
Some of them juvie I guess, but some of them were already 18, so they went to adult court/jail.

IIRC, the younger ones got off relatively light, by testifying against the older ring leaders.

There's no honour amongst teenagers, I don't see how pacifism gets you anywhere, in the face of the feral youth. I don't recall "don't fight back" as ever being an option which was extended to me, I'm getting a beat down either way at that point, so might as well go down swinging.
Yeah, Rule 1 of bullies, they are lazy. They kick your ass once but if you make them work for it, they won't "punch the clock" again.

I had to kind of operate in two modes, in the rougher neighborhood where I lived, "don't fight back" was definitely not an option, they'd just kick your ass, and then rob you, and then if they knew you were a mark, they'd keep doing it over and over, but coming from there to preppy world, I just didn't feel like I had to put up with any preppy shit; fuckin' with the wrong guy, Mr. Polo shirt, step off before I kick your ass and rob you.

Thing was, I was a "Level 6", which is the smart kids, but all the schools in my immediate area were "Level 4", which is the ghetto kids, the only Level 6 school in my area, was like all Chinese kids, and I told my parents "no fucking way, not happening", the only other Level 6 school which I could go to, was directly north up the subway line, in the preppy neighborhood, so that's how I ended up there, but the preppies could be inclined to give me attitude, because I didn't rock their style, at which point, I wasn't having that, rough neighborhood ethos; not one step back.

In the hood mode was all about deterring actual physical agression, in the preppy neighborhood mode it was more about deterring passive-agression.

When you say ghetto, do you mean that you lived around a bunch of black people? I think awhile back you said there were a lot of Russians in your hood.

It wasn't like the Jane & Finch ghetto, where it was like "Bloods and Crips" and shootouts all the time, the downtown eastside was just public housing projects, it was rough, but it was a mix, West Indians, Urban White Trash, Immigrants from all over, refugees, people on welfare, what have you.

I actually didn't live in public housing, I lived in a Co-Op, with the Democratic Socialists, but the downtown eastside hood was literally just across the road, and the dowtown eastside kids all came to the Kiwanis Club which was directly across the street, so I lived amongst the poor, without having to live in the same run down buildings with them, the Co-Op was actually pretty nice, it was just on the edge of the hood.

It was a little like NYC, where you can have "good block-bad block" all in close proximity.

How do the bad parts of Canada compare to those of the United States? Do you guys have areas that are as rough as Camden or East St. Louis or Detroit?

Jane & Finch is the closest thing we have to that in the 6ix, there they adopt that American style culture, there are literally Bloods and Crips there, they wear colors, they pack heat, there are shootouts, its an entrenched American style gang culture, it's not as run down as the American ghettos, it's not like crumbling, but they do have the massive housing projects, sort of like they have in New York.

The origin of the downtown eastside hood, Regent Park, Moss Park, and St. Jamestown, was that it is right on the edge of the Don River Valley, and during the Great Depression a massive shanty town sprung up down in the valley, but Hurricane Hazel washed it all away, so they took the opportunity to drive everybody out of there, and they built these three big projects to house them, but it's all surrounded by some of the choicest neighborhoods, for example, directly north of St Jamestown, is Rosedale, which is the richest neighborhood dowtown.

Jane & Finch is isolated from the city, it's massive, and it's spread over a huge area, so it can get more out of control, whereas dowtown, the police are better able to keep things under control, so it was never as cray-cray as up the north end of Jane St. Downtown eastside wasn't really about American style gangs and the drug trade, it was just rough, working class poor and hard scrabble.

The true bullies don't go after someone who can defend themselves, or at least make it hard. They usually pick on those who can't, so they don't get their proper beat-down.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I'm looking at the ethnic breakdown of Jane and Finch. A lot of Asians, more than I would have thought.

Yeah, they aren't the main drivers of violence though, there are Asian gangs up there, but the West Indians ruled the roost in my day, it's a fusion, between the American gun culture and the West Indian gun culture, nobody loves their guns more than Jamaicans, not even Americans, the Jamaicans shoot their guns in the air, at soccer games. Bup-bup-booyaka; West Indian.
