Never saw one of them in the wild, but I hear the victims rarely do see them until they pounce.

I have encountered several Appalachians who tell me seriously that there is, without a doubt, a black panther species living in the mountains. Not like a little Florida panther but a huge cat that is like a giant black panther. Nobody ever seems to kill them, but they claim to have seen them. That would scare the shit out of me right there.

I wonder if the jaguars are back?

Good advice in both your life in the sticks and your life in the burbs:

Don't be afraid of a little pussy; but beware of the big cat.

One swipe from the cougar paw, gut you like a fish, you'll be trying to hold your intestines in through your hands, while it crushes your throat with its jaws, even if your back up shoots it, you're already touch n' go, in need of immediate DUSTOFF.

There are black panthers and some brown panthers in the Hatchie River bottom where I grew up. They are nowhere as prevalent as bobcats, which are common pests, but they are out there. I've only seen a black panther in person a couple of times out deer hunting, you are very unlikely to see one in daytime. However, if you go camping in the bottom you will hear them often through the night. Not a comforting sound in your sleeping bag. :goteam: :drunk:

Big cat attack is rare, so all you can do is play the odds, but they are out there, and if your ticket ever comes up; the Velociraptor of the Canadian woodlands; one of you is going down, just to save the rest.

If it goes so far, to make its move on a full grown human? That means its real hungry, so ain't nothing gonna stop it, until it's too late.

One swipe to the guts, one bite to the neck, takes a split second, and even if the vascular surgeon is right there, with a full ER standing by, you're still touch n' go, soaring with the angels.

There's a lot of them up in the mountains in BC, you go mountain biking on the trails out there, they are watching you from the trees, bet dat. I'd recommend going in a big group, because one man alone throws his chain in the middle of nowhere, screwing around trying to fix his bike with no back up? Them big cats will start to make their move, no doubt. Out there all alone with your back turned, you're the big mouse then.

You saw one? These people aren't describing a mountain lion. They are describing a great big black panther, like you see in the zoo.

I wondered if maybe it's just jaguars making a comeback since the 1900s. But they say, no, it's like a huge black panther. Just like you see in the zoo.

These people aren't fucking around either. One woman's dad won't go out there without a rifle after seeing one.

Twice; both when I was a kid, and when flood waters were out in the bottom. That's about the only time you see nocturnal stuff out after daybreak. I didn't see a huge cat either time, but about the size of bobcat (maybe 15 pounds?), but jet-black in color. Definitely the baddest MFer in the valley.
