Re: Unite the Right
So the Normandy invasion was for pearl harbor, and anyone who says 1918 had something to do with it is making pointless abstractions. Got it.

Right on champ. The Conservative wrote:For the South, it was slavery, but that was the end result, the reason behind it all was political power, which they would lose if Californa became a Free State.
Way to bumble your way through a bunch of mental fluff and arrive at what-the-fuck-I-told-you-the-first-time.
Bravo.

Apeman's personal view: leave all monuments up everywhere. History happened. Go learn from it. Even that abomination of the Lenin statue can stay. Stop being a victim about everything.
If some segment of society REALLY cannot live with it, they have to articulate why, and the limits, for anyone to even consider compromise.
Resort to mob violence to physically destroy without consent of your neighbor is wrong and adds so much fuel to the fire.

No, 1918 is widely credited as being a primary cause for the Normady Invasion, of course! All of Eisenhower's troops stormed the beach shouting "Remember the Treaty of Versailles (which was actually signed in 1919)", and nary a one of them gave two shits about Japan attacking the USA.
Clearly your "logic" isn't contorted in the least. It's all connected, maaaaaaan. Every historical event known to man actually arises from the first two cavemen disagreeing over who gets to gnaw a bone next. You just have to go back far enough, maaaaan. Widen your perspective, maaaaaan. It's all about that first argument in that first cave dwelling.
Pffffft.

So in other words, you refuse to answer a question in where you know you are wrong. Good to know.DBTrek wrote:Snip

This clears up a lot. You really do look at history like one string, and any event on that string is only connected to the one event preceding it.DBTrek wrote:Okeefenokee wrote:So the Normandy invasion was for pearl harbor, and anyone who says 1918 had something to do with it is making pointless abstractions. The Soviet occupation of east Berlin had nothing to do with the Russian revolution. Those two events aren't sequential. They can only be related if they happen consecutively.

Indeed. I, DBTrek, personally control how history is recorded in understandable and relevant time-blocks. I controlled it when Heroditus did it, I controlled it when Will Durant did it, I control it when Dan Carlin does it.Okeefenokee wrote:This clears up a lot. It's an absolute tyranny of understandable and clearly related events transpiring within a reasonable proximity of the event under discussion.
Historical tyrant, right here.
Before my time (which was never), people had a more amorphous view of history, where everything was related to everything else, and every event was actually caused by whatever subset of everything the speaker wanted to focus on.
