why not hit them before they get near america instead? seems a much better way to defend americans than your approach of waiting until ground fire takes them out or hoping shittier detection methods will still allow them to be taken out before they do damage

I suspect that the US Navy has better deployment range than the F35, carriers notwithstanding. Then there are the hundreds of military bases with SAM batteries scattered throughout Europe, the Pacific, Japan... Pretty tough to imagine the magical air threat that could get anywhere near us, but ok.
