Oh I don't disagree, the problem here is that transparency is what they don't want in this case. They want companies to be transparent to find out what they are doing with their private data.
The real problem is that their data isn't private as they think it is. As long as you use a third party company, you will always be at the whims of said company... including what they do with your data.
Personally, it's the reason I own all my hardware... I also VPN into everything before surfing at home now. My wife doesn't understand why I insist on it, but she accepts it because she knows that I know security... I've been debating about finding out what I need to start up a small ISP, but I'm not there yet.
