You are overthinking a simple concept. A self-governed people is necessarily an armed people. Full stop. Self-evident truth.

Despite plenty of evidence to the contrary? From Australia to Costa Rica to Sweden there are democracies that are not full of civilians armed to the teeth. In fact most are not, Switzerland and Israel are outliers.

Not Australia, dont do Australia. In reality if you dont live in like the three major cities and suburbs you have plenty of guns and while those laws maybe on the books enforcement is something else entirely. Australia is like NY state. New York City and Albany is an open air prison, but upstate every 3rd house has an "assault rifle" and they ain't registered and you damn sure ain't going to take it.
