There are probably a dozen people in any major city that could figure out aquaculture. And only so many cities that even have a water supply to do it.Speaker to Animals wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:You want to try and till a yard with your bare hands? It doesn't seem like it at first, but if you use your imagination, it become obvious that they could potentially provide a good portion of their food, though their population would still need to be reduced by quite a lot.
Urban agriculture would be totally different. It would be mostly aquaculture and rooftop gardens. The parks could be converted to something like the Mayan milpas. That's the closest to tilling soil they would get.
If you really stop and reconsider them, cities are a huge waste of space. But it wouldn't take an impossible amount of effort to reclaim wasted space for growing food (and making the cities more livable at the same time).

Well, maybe a few more, but you're right. The entire Southwest US is suddenly going to be uninhabitable. Think of Vegas and Phoenix that are so over populated for the sustainability of the environment, it would be Mad Max folks.GrumpyCatFace wrote: There are probably a dozen people in any major city that could figure out aquaculture. It would probably be Mad Max for about a week, until the bottled water runs out. Then it would be paved with bodies.C-Mag wrote:Well, maybe a few more, but you're right. Hell, I'm not even sure how most would fare in the Midwest. Heating a wooden home in winter time would be incredibly difficult, without a potbelly stove or such.
EDIT: Already spotted a plot hole in "One Second After". The morning after the Event, his daughter takes a cold shower. Then he drives into town and learns that his house is 250 ft too high for water supply.

Good catch, but it is actually quite possible. If the water heater was on a floor above the shower, there would be enough gravity pressure for a poor quality cold shower.GrumpyCatFace wrote:It would probably be Mad Max for about a week, until the bottled water runs out. You asked about bugging out earlier, that's mostly an urban thing, because in the cities, as you know you are completely dependent on the cities infrastructure and supply system. But in most cities, even say Salt Lake City, if there is a rush to get out, the freeways would quickly turn into road blocks, key is to not be part of that.

Saudis and Yemenis place their solar water heater on top of the roof and take a cold shower in the morning and hot one at night.

Check this out. This is kind of what I imagine SHTF to be like.

I've never understood this. Who gives a fuck if the stores are looted? The businesses are all insured, the food is sitting there rotting, why not give it away?C-Mag wrote:Pretty standard in 3rd world countries.Nukedog wrote:Saudis and Yemenis place their solar water heater on top of the roof and take a cold shower in the morning and hot one at night.

I'm not making any assumptions on what he's protecting or why, could be good reasons for it.GrumpyCatFace wrote:I've never understood this. Who gives a fuck if the stores are looted? Castles and trebuchets guys what have I been telling you. Shit maybe I'm already a top level prepper and I just didn't realise.GrumpyCatFace wrote:There was a good thread on this on Political Forum. http://politicalforum.com/index.php?thr ... ht.411715/Speaker to Animals wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:

There will probably be a few hundred of these dummies starving or murdered on the side of the road.
Yeah, that's the other funny part. But I was just speaking generally about people who themselves speak generally about dealing with nebulous threats in a SHTF scenario.
What they are really talking about militia-level warfare, and yeah, they are going to be huffing it with a lot of gear.
Basically, the underground-bunker guys are building their own coffins. Cut the air supply, or blow smoke down there, and take their stuff.
The best solutions for SHTF-world are medieval. Small holdings, fortified with earthworks, and a feudal or tribal structure. It's getting through that first year or so that would be painful, and very, very ugly.
Could be time to take a longbow making course.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.
