What "active measures" did Russia use this election cycle versus previous election cycles?

From listening to testimony the "active measures" center on "fake news" stories promoted by RT/Sputnik and other AMERICAN outlets.

The Podesta hacking is hardly discussed from what I have heard of Intel Committees.

If Obama had a "smoking gun" why would he sit on it with so much on the line for the 2016 election?

There are many interesting things in Watts testimony. Like the trail of the dead Russians...

Former FBI special agent Clint Watts was part of the committee’s investigation. He told the committee that the Russians may now be trying to cover their tracks. “Follow the trail of dead Russians,” Watts said. “There’s been more dead Russians in the past three months that are tied to this investigation who have assets in banks all over the world.”

Naturally the FBI wants to make a solid case ...which naturally the Trump supporters will just look as a fake conspiracy made by the Deep State. Yet of course, let's see how many Trump supporters there will be in a half year... if Trump continues as he has now done.

The money trail would be important...and something that has to be found. Because if there would be "collusion" but no money trail, it's not so damaging to Trump. In Washington, top level officials can say simply have amnesia or to say that they were "Out-of-the-loop" as Bush sr. said about the Iran-Contra thing. Hence if this does amount to serious charges, Trump can simply say that people were doing this behind his back, totally unrelated to him.

Of course, you do have the rumours of a serious money trail on the "dodgy dossier". The dossier, which some of the Russians that helped it to be made have now turned dead.

Those who won't listen to it, here's the details:

- 2009 started tied to active
- 2014 capability of influence campaigns
- 2015 hacking tied to influence campaigns, one year buildup to the election
- 2016 push into the US audience landscape

At 1h 23min 21s one senator asks the important question: why was this such a surprise. The answers are quite obvious: The US intelligence community wasn't looking at it, it was looking at terrorism. Also the intelligence services don't look at what is happening in the open source environment.

And finally, at 1h 36min the obvious answer just why the Russian active measures was so successfull. The obvious answer.

Furthermore, in the hearing the objectives of this kind of active measures, information campaigns, can be done:

- Undermine citizen confidence in democratic governance
- Foment and exacerbate divisive political fractures
- Erode trust between citizens and elected officials and democratic institutions
- Popularize Russian policy agendas within foreign populations
- Create general distrust or confusion over information sources by blurring the lines between fact and fiction.

Looking at those objectives, the Russians have obviously are hitting a home run here.
