And seriously, our amateurs will probably win the gold anyway. NHL is a conglomerate of the best in the world, from all countries. It kind of makes sense to only have citizens of the actual countries competing for them instead.

Except the players in the tournament are mostly NHL players, who got cut from the NHL because they couldn't keep up anymore and/or didn't have the skills to keep their slots in the line up and/or went back to Russia cause the taxes are lower there.

It's still pro players, it's just third tier pro players playing in Europe and so not bound by the NHL CBA.

Russia has Pavel Datsyuk playing for them, he's going to be an NHL hall of famer, Detroit Red Wing, Selke trophy winner, Stanley Cup champion, one of the greatest two way centers in the history of the NHL.

Rasmus Dahlin is playing for Sweden, he's the number one NHL draft pick this June, but he already plays pro in Sweden, in the SHL.

There's not many amateurs playing in this tournament, they're getting paid to play, most of them in the KHL, which is the pro league in Russia, or the SHL in Sweden, or the German league, Swiss league, what have you.

Personally, I'm not like Capps, I couldn't care less that the NHL is not at the Olympics, it was good that Canada was able to prove its dominance in the Olympics, in terms if what happens when it's really best on best, which is Canada being the best, but I lived most of my life with the NHL players not being at the Olympics, with the Soviet Union dominating, and reality was, that just meant that the Olympics didn't matter, didn't care before, don't care now, been there, done that, won gold in the USA, won gold at home in Vancouver, won gold in Russia, most gold medals all time, mission accomplished, and now, it's back to the Stanley Cup being the undisputed title, same as it ever was.

If the NHL players are not there, then it's not the best in the world, if the Olympics are OK with that, so am I, they can be the fake world title all they like, it's no skin off my teeth.
