What gave you the impression they "checked out" of the political system? They just inflicted a huge impact on the previous election. They are quite active. More active than most other groups.

They did fuck all, the alt-right didn't win Trump the election, people who voted for Obama in key swing states did. There is a reason Trump is ditching the Alt-Right, he doesn't need them.

A better ontology would label the entire thing as identitarianism, of which the "alt-right" remains a subgroup.
