So long as the plane is not in flight, they can tell you to get off. If you don't obey the orders of the crew, just for safety reasons they have broad latitude to throw you off the flight, it's called "unruly passenger", they do it all the time.

If you start being an unruly passenger in flight, they'll just land the plane at the next available field and have you arrested.

The airlines know exactly what they can and cannot do, and throwing this guy off the plane for staging a "sit in", that's an easy one, sayonara.

Yeah, that is basically airline policy. They can deny you even after you have booked and paid for your ticket. Although, legally they do have to compensate the passenger they bump.
