Re: Free College?
The student loan debt is toxic. Neither banks nor the govt have even figured out a way to value the debt instruments.
No one is buying that except the taxpayers. Period.

We could make it a condition of the next bank bailout.

Re: Free College?
Without free and compulsory education you're looking at a return to Victorian era and before levels of illiteracy and peasantry. Since there are no more subsistenence farmer jobs anymore you'd be creating even more of a desperately poor, government-dependent underclass than there is now.Okeefenokee wrote:Yes. Public education sucks, and the costs keep rising. Bring college into the fold and watch the same thing happen even more than it is now. Free shit for everyone is going to ruin this nation.California wrote:Should there be sacrifice for high school and elementary school?Okeefenokee wrote:You want free college, but you don't think there should be any sacrifice in attaining it?
Truly shocked.
There are simply too many people who will leave their kids out of school if its something that they need to pay for and/or have the choice to send them. Its a historical fact.
We've argued ad nauseam in another thread that public education needs reform, but thinking just because something is paid for via taxes (not free btw) is going to ruin the nation is just ridiculous. The old Protestant grace-through-sacrifice paradigm is simply bullshit

By all means, we must preserve 2017 levels of illiteracy and peasantry! :goteam: :drunk:California wrote:Without free and compulsory education you're looking at a return to Victorian era and before levels of illiteracy and peasantry.

EDIT: I can't really argue this point without sounding like a dumbassOkeefenokee wrote:They have a better chance of drinking themselves to death on campus than ever seeing combat.California wrote:They might get sent to go make some big conglomerate money and come out dead or maimed in the meantime.Okeefenokee wrote:You parents could put your kids in the military for four years, have them learn discipline, maturity, and responsibility, and at the end they get free college.
What's the problem?
You win on this one.
I'm sure I can compare per-year and troop surges but yeah whatever

This. Public schools are not doing a good enough job that anyone should be touting them as the wall between us and an ignorant peasantry.Fife wrote:By all means, we must preserve 2017 levels of illiteracy and peasantry! :goteam: :drunk:California wrote:Without free and compulsory education you're looking at a return to Victorian era and before levels of illiteracy and peasantry.

No sacrifice, no reward.California wrote:While your math is correct, that there is more of a chance of dying from alcohol-related injuries than combat, the fact of the matter is that's a personal choice, while once you're enlisted your life is in the hands of whoever wants to use you to make money for someone. Even though the US has a dismal 84% literacy rate I can guarantee you if public school stopped being free and compulsory that rate would drop below 50%Okeefenokee wrote:This. I don't believe that someone has to create grace through sacrifice
This is current year, we don't have to preach suffering morality anymore
