Right now, I would rather work of more money and then later in life work less hours.

Very interesting... During my lifetime, as a country we have continually been moving to the left, socially anyway, and the Conservative narrative of "things are getting worse" was from the right. It never occurred to me that the roles have been reversed, even though I always add the caveat to my Liberty vs. Socialist explanation that anyone can be conservative.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:Well, all my friends that majored in Exploring Intersectionality Through Interpretive Dance aren't exactly optimists these days... but they are just being sticks in the mud over America's re-greatification.
Plus, I'm assuming all your woo-woo friends are socialists, if not Marxists, that's also something I never experienced in my lifetime.

Do you like your job?
What do you do when you're not working?
I'm thinking back to when I was a working machine... In retrospect, it was soul-crushing but that was almost totally masked by ambition, and I didn't have the wisdom at the time to make sophisticated analysis of the situation. I do know that I certainly wouldn't have put the enormous effort into work without the opportunity for personal gain. No wonder Marxist societies atrophy.

Finland's trying for both.
Finland just launched an experiment giving 2,000 people free money until 2019
Under universal basic income (UBI), people receive a standard amount of money just for being alive. By handing out the money to everyone, regardless of their income status, UBI advocates say the system prevents people from falling through the cracks

The experiment has been running in the U.S. for a while now; see the "Disability Fraud" thread. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1482

Well, I do need to pay my bills and support myself- so if working more equals to more money then yeah I will do it. I mean I do like my job and there is that as well. Although, if I could work less in the Summer time (maybe a more seasonal job) then I might but right now I need the extra money. Plus, I am also trying to save up some money for whatever comes down the road.Martin Hash wrote:There's a truth in here somewhere...Penner wrote:Right now, I would rather work of more money and then later in life work less hours.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Finland. But I won't count the same thing happen in the US anytime soon. We basically either punish the poor or we tend to be really stingy with our helping people.Okeefenokee wrote:Finland's trying for both.

Eliminating every single assistance department, firing everyone that staffs them, selling the buildings, and instead transitioning to one system that pays everyone a check for say, a thousand bucks a month, might actually save money.
I haven't done the math, but armies of government workers and bureaucracy, along with the over head of each of them needing workplaces to staff in every city across the country, and their benefits, has to be more expensive than tearing the whole thing out, and replacing it with one system that automatically deposits funds into your account each month.

$1,000 dollars isn't going to be enough to support even one person- hell average rent is like $500-$800 (for a place that isn't in an area where stray bullets may fly into your window) in my area alone and that's considered to be affordable- on a national scale. That is already half of that $1,000 going to rent alone and then you have other bills like car insurance, utilities, and food. Not to mentioned saving for things like when your car breaks down, car inspections, gas, retirement, health care, clothes, etc....Okeefenokee wrote:Eliminating every single assistance department, firing everyone that staffs them, selling the buildings, and instead transitioning to one system that pays everyone a check for say, a thousand bucks a month, might actually save money.

I mean if we all just lost our jobs tomorrow and started working at the Dollar Store and then earn that $1,000 it will still be hard to live on that assistance. I mean things like food stamps, etc... will still probably go up.

It's not intended to support you. It's a supplement. Finland isn't supporting Fins with six hundred bucks a month.Penner wrote:$1,000 dollars isn't going to be enough to support even one person- hell average rent is like $500-$800 (for a place that isn't in an area where stray bullets may fly into your window) in my area alone and that's considered to be affordable- on a national scale.
