The closest we ever came to nuclear anihilation, was on 9 November 1979, and 26 September 1983, I don't remember exactly what I was doing on those days, but I certainly do not recall either day being hell on earth.jediuser598 wrote:The sword is always at all of our throats, since the invention of nuclear weapons and then their proliferation. I live an area that would see utter destruction, being as close to Seattle as I am. Many argue that's why we have peace, the mutually assured destruction. But I don't hope for the death of civilization, I don't hope for another Cuban Missile Crisis.
Why? Why do you wish for such pain and suffering? Would you have us enter another World War? Just so men in uniforms can distinguish themselves in the mud and blood of combat? I hope it never comes. The world would be better off if it never comes. When all our industry, ingenuity, creativity, and humanity is wasted on shells just plowing humans into the ground, so we can gain a few inches of land as we fight each other to extinction. I do not wish for hell.
That's the great thing about nuclear weapons, they are entirely binary, either they keep the peace, or they don't, and in between, you don't have to actually fight for those inches, because nuclear weapons render all those inches irrelevant, allowing you to just get on with your life, rather than spending most of it fighting conventional wars.
