Ok, and you turned out way way better than I did man, no question about that. But you were playing with fire and are very fortunate. I knew this kid in high school who was really into comics. Then he got into anime. Now he is a woman trapped in a man's body. I'm not making this up. There is no doubt in my mind that the comics acted as a gateway to gayer things like anime and finally an outright trans lifestyle. He started as a marvel/dc pupae and ended up an HIV positive butterfly. And this happens all the time. Every day in fact.

But like I say, I did like French soft porn comics, Heavy Metal Magazine was in the rotation.

Back in the 70's we were into South Africa and Rhodesia, the RLI, the Recce Commandos.

I used to read about the training they did, in Soldier of Fortune magazine, and then try to emulate them.

I would go for runs with rucksack on, in combat boots, see how far I could go, how much pain I could tolerate, it was good PT for hockey and football as well, dry land training.

I idolized the Recce Commando as the real life superhero, no tights and cape, combat fatigues and FN FAL.

Apartheid Rhodesians and South Africans were pretty effective. Mozambique drilling Frelimo clowns and fighting Angolans and Zanu alike. I saw a pretty awesome video about Executive Outcomes where they were using a military chopper to help take down Foday Sankoh's troops in Sierra Leone and help the Freetown regime. Simon Mann was also interviewed, and that guy is awesome. Tried to take over Equatorial Guinea with Thatcher's nephew.

Wasn't really about Apartheid, I recognized that as an unsustainable Jim Crow system which wouldn't last.

In the meantime tho, they were amazing soldiers, the hardcore of the hardcore.

It was all about the soldiering for me.

Apartheid systems can last forever if there are no liberals in the electorate, though. Maybe if they are overly dependent upon trade or security from liberal nations they could get toppled from the outside.

South Africa fell because they disenfranchised the black Africans, and the white American liberals refused to protect them in the face of a Soviet threat.

Israel ain't going anywhere because they disenfranchised a bunch of Palestinians and until recently most Americans couldn't care less.

But because of mass migration in America resulting in a rapid colonization of the west by Muslims, I'd suggest to the Israelis that they start developing their own weapons systems, especially fighters and frigates.

I think I had the same core motivation as the comic book nerds did, I wanted to be a man of action, and I wanted to get dates with pretty girls.

The thing was that I had to make it happen. Wasn't good enough to fantasize about being that guy, I really wanted some combat action and sweet sweet pussy, and you ain't gonna find that down at the comic shop.

I didn't think the South Africans would win the global strategic war, no matter how tactically proficient in theater.

The point was they were great warriors, ultra professionals. That in of itself was the prize.
