It almost seems that some are convinced that the only way to assure that others (and maybe even themselves) stay on a virtuous path is that they be convinced that they have committed an original sin, are unworthy and must "behave" in order to redeem themselves...

How do you redeem yourself from this "original sin" of straight white maleness? Well, maybe you should just declare yourself a woman, start taking hormones and have your balls chopped off... You might get some measure of redemption that way, but trust us - we'll find a way to make sure your whiteness at least follows you around forever and ever, no matter how much contrition/repentance you show you are guilty, guilty, guilty!
