This is all about gaining control over the natural gas and oil in Ukraine so Russia cannot be challenged as the primary source of natural gas and oil to Europe. Russia knows as soon as Ukraine joins NATO there is nothing they can do to stop it. That was the point of capturing Crimea and why Russia has been funding separatists groups in and near Ukraine in order to ward off Western investment into these natural gas and oil fields.

Getting Europe off Russian dependence is exactly why powerful individuals in the US had their kids working with Ukrainian oil companies to try and undermine Russian control of the European market.

This makes sense.

The question is, is this move insane? It seems insane.

Gaining control of the gas and oil may be technically possible, but alienating the entire world to do so?

Is this the gamble of a madman... or is there some scenario where Putin pulls this off?

Does Putin come to regret entering a quagmire in the Ukraine?

Does it become a bleeding ulcer that drains Putin of his credibility and where he is ultimately overthrown by an usurper?

Or is there some scenario where this actually works?

I would call it desperate more than insane. Both Russia and China want a return to former glory. Russia does not care so much about replacing the US, but they do want to retain what they see as their sphere of influence. China wants to return to a mythical time where only China mattered (which never actually existed outside of east Asia). The problem is for both countries, more so China than Russia, is their future outlooks are not very good. They both cannot get any more powerful within the current status quo as they are right now. So they have this 10 to 20 year window right now where they have to change the status quo. If they can change the status quo they get to be regional or global powers until the status quo changes again, otherwise they will be relegated to continuing to live under the shadow of the US while India surpasses them.
