It's not the worst idea, and one that is a known threat against naval vessels. See: USS ColeDBTrek wrote:In al fairness to the rest of Earth, Smitty and Grumps are revered as military experts in exactly zero circles.

Re: North Korea News
As the Marine Corps saw the writing on the wall, the writing pointing to the fact that opposed beach landings were becomming an anachronism, you'll note that they subtlely but significantly changed their mandate from "Amphibious" to "Expeditionary", and that really does reflect a change in doctrine, they maintain amphibious capabilities, but it is no longer their raison d'etre, and as the shift has progressed, they've become ever more airpower oriented, they essentially believe what Grumpy is saying, in that they are not going to conduct opposed landings against significant defenses anymore, but will in fact fly over the beach to bypass those defenses, as an airborne force from the sea.

Well Grumpy thinks amphibious landings aren't even useful against any kind of defense, that's different from saying they won't conduct opposed landings against significant defenses anymore, which is a point that I was making. If anything the Marines essentially believe what I am saying, Grumps isn't adding shit to the argument, he's making grandiose claims that he can't back up at all.Smitty-48 wrote:As the Marine Corps saw the writing on the wall, the writing pointing to the fact that opposed beach landings were becomming an anachronism, you'll note that they subtlely but significantly changed their mandate from "Amphibious" to "Expeditionary", and that really does reflect a change in doctrine, they maintain amphibious capabilities, but it is no longer their raison d'etre, and as the shift has progressed, they've become ever more airpower oriented, they essentially believe what Grumpy is saying, in that they are not going to conduct opposed landings against significant defenses anymore, but will in fact fly over the beach to bypass those defenses, as an airborne force from the sea.

But the beaches would also be lined with things like the Bastion Coastal Defense system, launching the Onyx supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, and the ships are as a result even more vulnerable than aircraft, so the Navy has been moving its launch point further and further back, to the point where the Marine Corps has said; "if we have to come from this far back, then we will have to fly in, and if we fly in, there's no point in stopping on the beach at all, just bypass that and fly all the way."DBTrek wrote:Beaches lined with SA-21 Growlers and troops packing MANPADS.
They're basically going to fly in, capture an airhead, and then have the air force reinforce them, no beach landing at all.

Re: North Korea News
Then amphibiously land after the biggest defenses are taken out and secure the objective. But Grumps thinks that second phase is somehow obsolete now, you can just bring troops in from the nearest US military base instead or simply use paratroopers to capture it and that's the better option in every single imaginable circumstance than having the marines secure the objective before the other US troops arrive. I for one call bullshit on that.Smitty-48 wrote:But the beaches would also be lined with things like the Bastion Coastal Defense system, launching the Onyx supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, and the ships are as a result even more vulnerable than aircraft, so the Navy has been moving its launch point further and further back, to the point where the Marine Corps has said; "if we have to come from this far back, then we will have to fly in, and if we fly in, there's no point in stopping on the beach at all, just bypass that and fly all the way."DBTrek wrote:Beaches lined with SA-21 Growlers and troops packing MANPADS.
