From a 1990 Atlantic
John Wilkes Booth was inspired by Shakespeare, Julius Caesar. Booth saw himself as Brutus, doing what must be done.
So much heat over a remark on different methods of suicide.
Okay.

I think Booth yelled Sic Semper Tyranis right before he popped Lincoln, which is what Brutus allegedly said when he stabbed Caesar. Pretty clear the story influenced Booth.

Booth thought that he would be a hero and instead the people banded against him and elevated Lincoln to the level of Jesus. Not to mention that before that Lincoln's popularity was going down and but he did win re-election a few months before Booth shot.

I wonder, if instead of a failure Reconstruction would have been successful, if Lincoln had not been assassinated. He was certainly not feckless like his successor Andrew Johnson, and he was supposed to be a advocate for reconciliation, unlike the Republican Party which wanted revenge after the assassination.
I think Mr. Booth might have done the South some harm there.

Oh, yeah, Booth did more harm than good to both the South and also to the North. A lot of historians do believe that if Lincoln were president that he would've been more about reconciliation than punishment. I mean sure he did have some plans for punishment but it wasn't believed to be as harsh as what the Republicans wanted.
Edit:
People also leave Lincoln pennies where Booth's final resting place is believed to be. Sort of a last middle finger to the guy:

How is talking about history and the what-ifs, so how is that murder porn? I might mention I have been studying American history and the Civil War, intermittently it's true, for a few decades. So maybe I am into some ghoulish assassin murder porn???

Liberals are saying in their smug tone that they know it is a tradegy and not something to aspire too. But Boothe, an actor who has worked Shakespeare, styles himself as Brutus, so Juluis Ceaser is murder porn anyway you slice it.
