I wonder, if instead of a failure Reconstruction would have been successful, if Lincoln had not been assassinated. Oh, yeah, Booth did more harm than good to both the South and also to the North. A lot of historians do believe that if Lincoln were president that he would've been more about reconciliation than punishment. I mean sure he did have some plans for punishment but it wasn't believed to be as harsh as what the Republicans wanted.
