Most of the Haida I met were nothing like this guy. They were almost all decent people.
Not that I met loads of them... but a few... on the airplane, at breakfast, on the tours....
They hang out at the cultural sites as "watchmen" and give tours.
These sites are way out there - we went by zodiac - it took four days to see 5 of them.
Lots of cool wildlife along the way.
Totally worth it.

Well in those dueling quotes you see that community is transcendent of individuals....
There is always a tension between these two entities.
Powerful individuals may make a society stronger or weaker - depending on how they wield their power.
Make your people individually weak - but harness them to the powerful individual at the top - and you have a hell of a force...
And make your people individually strong but have them run about in disarray... doing their own thing - and you have a clusterfuck.
But make your people individually strong AND harness them to powerful leadership - and then you have a nation of supermen and women and a super power the likes the world has never seen - namely the USA in its glory decades.
