Even supposing he is a real scumbag, I think the response of the internet should have been nothing. He's already operating outside of what's culturally acceptable, I'm sure the scene was cringe inducing for everyone nearby. If you were personally there then you could try to talk to him or confront him, or maybe lend a word to those involved, but these puritanical spams of mob justice are very much worrisome to me.

Putting the shoe on the other foot, I were walking through the city and somebody called me a cracker ass white boy, I wouldn't expect or want the internet to come down on the guy and destroy him. The response is worse than the act and is only accepted because the mob allows it.

What in your opinion would be an acceptable response? . . . I personally would have thought ‘crazy person’ and left.
Seems you’ve answered your own question. Nobody outside of NY is particularly impressed with “We from New Yahk, we get in yo face!” ethos. Great. You’re a bunch of rude, child-like morons who vastly overestimate your reputations as hardasses. So? What’s that mean to the rest of the civilized world which is too busy with useful endeavors to spend a whole day standing outside of a strangers house to shout at them?

Not much.
I’m neither rude nor a hardass, but am very aware that a city that crowded is going to have both. Stating the truth is, well, the truth. I think the persecution is overkill but the party was brilliant.

Brilliant?

In what way? If hiring a mariachi band rises to the level of New York “brilliance” I begin to see why all the innovation driving our economy is coming from the West Coast.

Meeting hatred with a party is brilliant. And who doesn’t love a mariachi band?

Seeking out a guys house, to drag a mariachi band there to harass him ... is meeting hatred? More like people with too much time and money on their hands, and not enough brains to be doing something worthwhile. By those standards it was “brilliant” when the Gods Hate Gays protesters hit up funerals - meeting degenerative sin with reminders of godly living and all . “Brilliant”.

Or spiteful and petty.

Depending on how infected by a particular dogma one is, I guess.

It depends on what all they did.

Hiring the mariachi band to play in front of his house for a day for being a huge douche, I think its fine.

Are they bringing him up on some sort of legal charges? Are they sending him death threats? Then those go to far.

But no, people from the same community telling a douche bag they are a douchebag is not going to far.

This wasn't blowing up over somebody's random crap twitter post.

This dude was in person. This dude was in somebody's work. A community response to somebody pulling bullshit in public is not too far.

He was evicted from his place of business, local politicians are pressing to de-bar (disbar?) him so he can’t make a living, AND his house is being stakes out by protesters with a mariachi band.

The “injured” parties still have jobs and haven’t suffered any lasting “damage” from his words. When is enough enough?

If the guy was sick, then it was cruel. If he was just a douchebag, then fiesta time. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Either way, protests in large cities are hardly unusual. Louis Farrakhan used to have rallies in the Penn Station area, which were blatantly racist. Nothing like going outside to grab a dirty water dog at lunch and hearing that you’re of the devil (nice to know they agree with the guy who’s usually standing on a box there).

I never said I supported the rest.
I said I didn't have a problem with the mariachi band. :D

If someone comes over into your place of work, making a giant scene screaming like a spoil brat bigot,
then playing mexican music in front of their house for a day is a proportional response.
