Conflict does not equal loneliness.Speaker to Animals wrote:nmoore63 wrote:No such thing as a tribe as big as the US.Speaker to Animals wrote:Multiculturalism does. Scientific fact. Humans are a tribal species.

Multiculturalism is a factor.
Urban life bringing together many cultures has been associated with mental illness... most robustly schizophrenia for as long as there has been data.
Urban life has also been associated with many of the ills of society since the beginning of urban life... (prostitution, crime, addiction)
But it just so happens that urban life has been a font of creativity, wealth, artistic innovation and many other positives... as well.
So this liberalism, urbanism thing is a double edged sword.... one edge is creativity and innovation...
and the other is alienation... and it's offspring, loneliness.
It would be so satisfying if there was a pure evil at play that we could wipe out... but sadly things are rarely so simple.

Then you don't understand what loneliness is. Someone can still be lonely in a crowded room. Not everyone is wired to just start talking to strangers walking by.Kath wrote:What science, though? I'm certain urban is a factor.DrYouth wrote:Multiculturalism is a factor.

But, if you want to put science into it, I am certain you will find modern homogenous cities full of lonely people too.
The modern tech, urban world is disconnecting people from each other and causing loneliness far more than whether or not your city is made up of 10% brown people or 20% brown people.

In fact, the causation is quite clear in the data. More multi-culturalism causes low-trust communities where everybody is more alienated.
That is what multiculturalism leads to.
Well, that and authoritarianism (anarcho-tyranny) or sectarian war.

“I’m lonely because there are only 4,732 people like me in my town but there used to be 6,732”

Nah people are lonely because they aren’t talking to people. Just like the depressed are sad because they don’t smile enough.PartyOf5 wrote:Then you don't understand what loneliness is. If only people could see the simple solutions to their issues.
