Property was also very widely distributed. Outside of the cities, the poor still had some land, could grow their own food, and had basic things that the poor today cannot have without some form of assistance.

Where and when are you speaking of? In much of Europe for hundreds of year peasants were tenant farming land they did not own. I was just reading about the situation in Ireland where absentee landowners and subleasing skimmed so much of the productivity that it was difficult for farmers to even subsist.
