The politicians reflect their donors and constituents. Everyone's ok with budget cuts as long as some other part of the country is affected; just don't touch my piece of the pie. It's the same mentality that is cool with building more prisons and funding more halfway houses, as long as they aren't in one's own neighborhood. Ideas look great as long as someone else bears the consequences. You want to stop out if control federal spending? Find a way to unite the country.

Same here. I see it both ways. I know people that own Houses in the city and they can't wait to move into some condo on the outskirts. My one friend got a letter from the city storm drain backed up on his property, the city has to fix it within one week, $4000 dollars please. Luckily he had it in savings but seriously fuck that.

I don't think uniting the country would reduce spending, it might even lead to an increase in spending, because now more people agree on something to spend the money on.
