For me I liked 3.5.1 (unofficial release) That is as far as I went...4 and 5 can go suck my nuts.DBTrek wrote:I stopped at 3rd ed. when they went to the D20 system. The writing was on the wall:

Nope.
If you can't handle the bard progression from 1st. Ed (or Monk up through Master of Flowers) and incorporate psionics as written then GTFO of the roleplaying community, scrub.

They actually fixed it. 5th Edition is really good.
The mechanics are not as good as 2nd Edition (not sure why they wanted to mess with that in the first place), but there is a lot more material to work with, and the character development is more interesting. It's not a video game on paper like 3rd edition either.
Call of Cthulhu had GREAT mechanics. Everything was based on probability. So you would have, say, a 30% chance of succeeding at some action, and you'd roll your two ten-sided die to see if you beat it.
If I were to develop a fantasy game from scratch, I'd add in separate traits for agility and dexterity. Armor would be a fixed amount of deflection that could potentially be compromised with each strike, and a lot of armor would reduce your own agility and dexterity. Hitting somebody and dealing damage would be two separate rolls. That's about all I would have wanted to change with 2nd Edition. Still, add all the character development stuff. That material is what makes the game better, not fucking with tried-and-true mechanics.

Damn guys. With attitudes like that against your fellow Pen and Paper players, maybe it's you? Like seriously, calm the fuck down.
I play 5e, having not played the previous editions, I'm still having fun. Working on becoming a DM, as my friend is teaching me. Already have the overall setting created for my campaign, now filling in the details about the specific city and where the characters start.
Was funny though, I think my DM hates casters and is trying to kill the fuck out of me, but I'm narrowly avoiding death every time he tries. We have a group of 5 level 8's, and he threw 4 level 10 fighters, and 2 level 15 sorcerers at us. They get a surprise round and fire off 3 fireballs at us right out the gate, I get into cover in time behind our fighter (by making the dex saving throw) and luckily only take partial damage from the explosion. Then roll initiative, ofc I roll a one, so they bad guys get to go again before I've even moved once. One guy casts disintegration at me and I barely make my saving throw, but if you make a saving throw on a disintegration spell, that's 0 damage .
Our Wizard takes it full in the face, gets vaporized. I think he got one turn and was just turned into dust. The other caster is mad now, like "fuck this guy, lets hit him with something that can't miss."
The other players at the table are talking again and again to me about how great magic missile is, and I'm all like "meh, it's ok, there are better spells." The table wants to show me how great the spell is, and how wrong I am for not taking it. The wizard looks me in the eye (my buddy that just died) and goes "why don't you just cast magic missile at the highest level and show him how great a spell it is?" I'm giving him the evil eyes, say "seriously dude, you working for the enemy team or something?" The DM's like "that's a great idea." But you know the old saying, "when your enemy is making a mistake, it's rude to interrupt them." The enemy sorcerer casts it at 8th level. First thing I think is, holy fuck, they're level 15, second is, what a huge mistake my DM made.
He pulls out damage dice, I'm like "nope, reaction - shield, magic missile does no damage" he's like "wait, nuh uh" I show him the spell and he goes "damn, you're right." I go, "oh, now it's my turn?" 4th level hold person, the two sorcerers and the 10th level fighter that was beating on me are paralyzed. That's rolling advantage with auto crits, our two fighters cut them to pieces. After that, another 4th level hold person on the remaining three, fight won and done, pretty simple.

I don't think there was an option to block Magic Missile, back when I played...

Back in my day we took our d4 from each magic missile like men, AND WE LIKED IT!

You young whippersnappers don't even know, in the 80's Monster Manual and Monster Manual II was as close as some midwestern kids could get to a Heffner mag. It was a game, yes, but also so much more.
The Satanic Panic, you had to be there.

Well it's a great utility spell. Say someone casts mirror image, you cast magic missile and cast it on all copies of the caster, and mirror image goes away, or say you want to disrupt someone's concentration, that's what, 3 con saving throws? But for damage? Meh, not so good.

Last I played was when 3rd Ed came out, with the dipshit d6 system. Then I discovered video games.jediuser598 wrote:http://engl393-dnd5th.wikia.com/wiki/ShieldGrumpyCatFace wrote:I don't think there was an option to block Magic Missile, back when I played...

5e is legit, you should check it out.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Last I played was when 3rd Ed came out, with the dipshit d6 system. Also, there is a great 5e show out there with great characters and an awesome DM. If you've a hankering for Dnd, this show is well put together:

A bunch of nerdy voice actors get together and play 5e. Matt Mercer is an amazing DM.
