I don't think it will go through with this Congress, but it's not going to be around forever. I'll have to keep my eye on prices while this works itself out. PR is never going to be cheap - it's part of the US and is a tropical island - but it can be more affordable.

I'm concerned that the already high crime rate, driven by the continuing loss of jobs, is going to get even worse. Puerto Ricans are relocating to the mainland at a high rate, which is the safety valve that prevents the kind of political instability that it would have already seen otherwise. That's why I want to wait and see.

It's a funny artifact of history that all our potential 51st states, PR, DC, and splitting CA, would result in a new Blue stronghold. There's no Red state to make to balance like they did with AK & HI. Split TX?

You split California one would be Red. The State of Jefferson would most likely be red. PR has elected GOP in the near past, we could be competitive, but as of right now, nope.

You'd have to split it into east and west states rather than north south to achieve that, but that would be untenable if you're trying to split the population evenly. None of the counties that went for Trump are densely populated. Creating Jefferson, pop 2.4 mil, would totally miss the point of giving more fair representation to the 39 million Californians with only 2 senators.

Fuck them. If they don't like it they can leave altogether. The political reality is not some Solomon like even split. If we are redressing grievances oldest one first. The urban welfare centers have had run of the place for decades they lose one election and suddenly we have a problem and want to leave the US, but we are just supposed to ignore the people in the north that have been moving for independence for decades? Yeah that is not happening. California should be familiar with fault lines, Jefferson is a big fault line and if we are breaking things up, they should get first crack at self determination.
