I just came across a hedgehog at the farm. Not a particularly spectacular animal but increasingly rare. The population is estimated to have fallen from 30 million in the 1950's to under a million today. It was a youngster born this year which implies there is a breeding pair nearby. Made my day as I've not seen one for at least a couple of years.

No I spoke to him in a soft voice, observed him for a few seconds then walked away and left him to it.

As far as I know they are an indigenous species to the UK.

Stop lying to yourself. Caesar himself brought the first breeding pair of hedgehogs in the world to Britain.

They are cute

Any theories on to why they are becoming endangered?

Roadkills. They suck at traffic rules.
