Simply not true. The people don't always know what is good for them and sometimes the best legislation isn't the most popular. It's an arbitrarily high bar, and it serves no purpose at this point except to slow down reform and stop the other party from getting credit for passing good legislation by making that bar higher. Popular governance does not equal quality governance and just because 60% of the Senate isn't on board with a bill doesn't mean it sucks, they are just as likely to oppose good bills as bad ones.

:text-bravo: Furthermore, the Senate and the country are not synonymous. What the Senate will filibuster over and what the people want isn't necessarily the same.

Evidence- What's the approval rating of Congress? If people agreed with it, they'd have a more favorable view of it.

The Senate was balls deep into TPA. They didn't have any problem with that. They didn't have any problem with TARP or Patriot Act or the Iraq War.

Some folks are just silly people, really, to believe these silly things.

The way the Constitution was setup, we should only need a simple majority to appoint somebody. The filibuster is an abuse. It shouldn't be considered as some integral part of the process. It's not and never was.

Sometimes you Americans just take the checks and balances thing too far, and think they are an end in themselves instead of a means to an end.

WTF you on about? We are 380 million people, from every ethnic background under the sun. Getting us to >50% on anything and not have the other 40% blow up the whole thing is a miracle of history. We are too coddled to realize what we have here.

Thats also bullshit. Whats the reelection rate of incumbents? It's easy to hate on the other 532 bastards, but your Congressman and Senators are yours and most like them.

The filibuster for appointments is a step too far I believe for non budgetary legislation it should be kept. And still is, Kath's chicken little routine not withstanding.
