The aristocracy still got around that, those ridiculous tax rates prove an aristocracy can't be eliminated via taxation, because they couldn't raise them much higher and the rich still got richer, it barely even slowed them down, so try again. Taxing the aristocracy will not eliminate it.Martin Hash wrote:How is it that people even worked before Reagan, 70% tax rates, my god? And before 1966, 90%! How big were the average American national redistribution checks during those years?Martin Hash wrote: How is it that people even worked before Reagan, 70% tax rates, my god? And before 1966, 90%! All the top talent just sat around on their hands.

I think you all have some weird ideas about the rules of Monopoly.DBTrek wrote:The “mathematical certainty” of a four player Monopoly board game applied to global economics.
Amazed more people haven’t been converted to this obviously correct worldview.
Are some of you laboring under the notion that Monopoly money supply / volume is somehow limited?

To answer your question though -
We're conditioned this way. We've been fucked over and betrayed by every institution in America, for money and power. It should not be surprising to see that reflected in the society. People under totalitarian/abusive regimes become abusive.
America is THE WORST!”
- Some Chunky White Dude Who Could Only Survive in America
If you think that you or I could 'only survive in America', then you are part of the problem. The two greatest visions of a future dystopia were George Orwell’s '1984' and Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World.' The debate, between those who watched our descent towards corporate totalitarianism, was who was right. Would we be, as Orwell wrote, dominated by a repressive surveillance and security state that used crude and violent forms of control? Or would we be, as Huxley envisioned, entranced by entertainment and spectacle, captivated by technology and seduced by profligate consumption to embrace our own oppression? It turns out Orwell and Huxley were both right. Huxley saw the first stage of our enslavement. Orwell saw the second.
We have been gradually disempowered by a corporate state that, as Huxley foresaw, seduced and manipulated us through sensual gratification, cheap mass-produced goods, boundless credit, political theater and amusement. While we were entertained, the regulations that once kept predatory corporate power in check were dismantled, the laws that once protected us were rewritten and we were impoverished. The state, crippled by massive deficits, endless war and corporate malfeasance, is sliding toward bankruptcy. We are moving from a society where we are skillfully manipulated by lies and illusions to one where we are overtly controlled.

Progressive tax rates push income down to the next tiers. One spouse can work and the other stays home with the kids kind of salaries.

No it didn't. It accelerated under Reagan, it did not begin with Reagan, not even close. Going back to pre-Reagan economic policy will not end stratification.Martin Hash wrote:??? I’m quite happy here, you’re the one who believes America is a fascist, totalitarian, dystopia.GrumpyCatFace wrote:

Aka - there is no problem, but if there were you would comprise the entirety of it.

Describe the stratification you're seeing in America.
