They are the same thing.
Religion may mask itself as the way to save the soul and avoid eternal damnation but all it really is is a way to control the masses.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

A non-religious political position allows for alternatives and opposition. A religion seeks to convert all in order to realize some destiny.

Don't like one political ideology, convert to another or opt out altogether.
Don't like one religious ideology, convert to another or opt out completely.
