New take for me though it does fit my Lucktocracy narrative.
From reading Kotkin and listening to him for hours talking about Stalin, what i take away from him is that Stalin was the most powerful man in the history of the world, and that he was massively paranoid. The take on Stalin I first heard was that because of his position as secretary, he had the power to block Zinoviev’s and Kamenev’s orders, Lenin’s chosen successors, and wrote his own orders to have them eliminated. Or something along those lines.
