We just need a snappier word for “competition”. 4 syllables is cumbersome.

“Sport” is most definitely going to imply athleticism for a few more generations, because it always has. Things like board games (which video games are an extension of) have always simply been called “games”.

They were probably not played competitively until the end of the 19th century, to my knowledge. Over 100 years, and we’ve never come up with a good word for it.

Oxford English Dictionary:
e-sport
NOUN
A multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers.

‘millions of people enjoy watching e-sports’
‘it's the most popular PC game and currently the most popular e-sport’
as modifier ‘the largest e-sports tournament in the world finished yesterday in Seattle’

So perhaps it's not a sport, it's an "e-sport."

Here's an encyclopedia article about it:
eSports

This article is about video game competitions. For simulated sports in video games, see sports game. For multiplayer games in general, see multiplayer video game.

The International, a Dota 2 tournament that is played annually at the KeyArena in Seattle
eSports (also known as electronic sports, esports, e-sports, competitive (video) gaming, professional (video) gaming, or pro gaming) are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, particularly video games; the input of players and teams as well as the output of the eSports system are mediated by human-computer interfaces. Most commonly, eSports take the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players. The most common video game genres associated with eSports are real-time strategy, fighting, first-person shooter (FPS), and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Tournaments such as The International, the League of Legends World Championship, the Evolution Championship Series and the Intel Extreme Masters provide live broadcasts of the competition, and prize money to competitors.

I look forward to DeepMind coming out with an algo to smoke everyone at Starcraft. Hell, I seem to remember OpenAI is going to expo a full team DOTA 2-playing AI at the next The International tournament, as a follow up to the one that destroyed the top players in 1 v 1:

Then, we can use traditional sports to benchmark the robotics side of things. I just love how modern technology is forcing us to look at these things like sports and games we always thought of as "uniquely human" and could only be mastered by human brains/athleticism, and showing us that, nah, that stuff's not so special after all, and true humanity is way harder to pin down. Or that we humans really are just not-so-special meat computers, one of the two.
