Dude government funded research, which would include the CDC, NIH, etc; doesn't necessarily solve pathological threats to the nation, but all public "heath" (more like "safety") issues. I'm pretty sure that it was NIH or some other government funded "health" agency ran the study that proved car seat belts lowered car death totals by a significant percentage, much like air bags being mandatory in cars, etc. Those studies helped see the data necessary to the government to make wearing seatbelts a mandatory thing.

Funding these types of "research" is more like saying people are looking at government data (i.e. car accident reports) and running a statistical analysis on that data.

Except the studies that altered the paradigm of automotive safety did not come from the government, wasn't NIH, private sector actually; that was all the Ford Motor Company under Robert McNamara when he was CEO, McNamara at Ford literally invented automotive safety as we know it.
