It most be some sort of prototype shotgun rifle round. Antifa are known for their use of experimental weapon technology.

Good rundown by Olivia Messer at The Daily Beast
Gunman Wounds Congressman in Brazen Attack
Steve Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, was shot with several others when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice early this morning.

OLIVIA MESSER 06.14.17 8:11 AM ET

A gunman attacked members of Congress early Wednesday morning at a baseball practice, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise. Five people were transported to the hospital, according to Alexandria, Virginia Police Chief Michael Brown.

Scalise is said to be in stable condition, and the gunman is reportedly in custody. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) told CNN the wounded included a House aide, a Capitol Police officer, and “a staffer who was shot in the leg.”

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) told Fox News reporter Brooke Singman he spoke to the gunman a few minutes before the shooting and the man asked him if the baseball team was Republican or Democrat. The practice was for Republicans.

Rep. Mike Bishop (R-MI) was standing at home plate when the gunfire began.

“As we were standing here this morning, a gunman walked up to the fence line and just began to shoot,” Bishop told Detroit's WWJ radio. “I was standing at home plate and he was in the third base line. He had a rifle that was clearly meant for the job of taking people out, multiple casualties, and he had several rounds and magazines that he kept unloading and reloading.”

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told reporters that Congressman Joe Barton’s 10-year-old son was at the field when the shooting broke out: “We got him in the dugout and put him under the bench,” Flake said.

Bishop said the gunman was clearly targeting lawmakers.

“He was coming around the fence line and he was looking for all of us who had found cover in different spots,” he said. “But if we didn’t have return fire right there, he would have come up to each one of us and shot us point-blank.”

Brooks said the shooter ran around the bases, he said, while Scalise “crawled into the outfield leaving a trail of blood.” Brooks said he heard upwards of 50 shots fired.

The congressmen were reportedly practicing for a bipartisan charity baseball game set to take place at Nationals Park on Thursday.

Flake said he believed one of Scalise’s security detail “brought the shooter down... he ran around for quite a while with a leg wound, returning fire.”

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, who is a physician, said he treated Scalise at the scene and that he was “conscious and OK.”

The suspect was in custody, as of 8:30 a.m. local time, Alexandria police confirmed.

“The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely,” said President Trump, in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

Stef W. Knight at Axios collects some statements.
Congressman Steve Scalise shot at baseball practice

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a GOP staffer, and two U.S. Capitol Police officers were shot this morning in Alexandria, Virginia. Scalise is stable and expected to recover from his injury. They were at a practice for the upcoming congressional baseball game.

The shooter had a rifle and scope, and Alexandria police say that the suspect is in custody and is not a threat.

Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said police officers shot at the suspect when they arrived. He said a total of 5 victims were removed from the scene. The Department is not revealing any identities yet, and Chief Brown did not take any questions.

Rep. Roger Williams released a statement, saying a member of his staff was shot at the baseball practice as well.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) said on Fox & Friends that he left the field shortly before the shooting, and said Scalise had been shagging ground balls at second base. DeSantis said he had reported to authorities "an encounter with someone who wanted to know whether they were Republicans or Democrats." DeSantis said he didn't know if it was the shooter.

Rep. Mo Brooks described the shooting on CNN, saying there were more than 50 shots fired. "The gun continued to fire."

Sen. Rand Paul said on Fox that there was a rapid succession of shots, and that he saw Scalise "trying to drag himself through the dirt." He added, "I think we're lucky that Scalise was there because this was his security detail, without them it would have been a massacre."

Sen. Jeff Flake said on CBS, "There was firing behind us from the security detail...we didn't know if there were other shooters that had us surrounded."
Rep. Brad Wensrup used his belt to stop Scalise's bleeding. He told CBS News, "I felt like I was back in Iraq as a surgeon."

Rep. Mike Bishop said, according to the Daily Beast, "He was coming around the fence line and he was looking for all of us who had found cover in different spots. But if we didn't have return fire right there, he would have come up to each one of us and shot us point-blank."

President Trump released a statement: "The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected."
