It will be very easy to fathom, soon. Trust me on that.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:Do you have trouble trying to fathom a reality where you work twice as much for what you currently have?Xenophon wrote:I can't fathom a reality in which I work half time for the same level of comfort I provide my family right now, but if it were possible, I'd rather have more time to invest in my wife and daughter. I do not. As automation increases, more and more workers will be out of a job. I fully expect some hard times coming. I'm no Pollyanna.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:Do you have trouble trying to fathom a reality where you work twice as much for what you currently have?Xenophon wrote:I can't fathom a reality in which I work half time for the same level of comfort I provide my family right now, but if it were possible, I'd rather have more time to invest in my wife and daughter. Productivity needs to continue increasing until a "meager lifestyle" is easy to reach, and the definition of "work" needs to expand to include things that can be considered investments: education, training, infrastructure, child rearing & the like.

I make a lot of OT money, and thinking of how easy it is to add days when I'm already working 5 days if they needed me to add another 13 hour shift for a 4th day I'd get even more overtime AND have two or even three days off stillHanarchy Montanarchy wrote:Yeah, and if 3 days meant full time, think how much more overtime you would get.TheReal_ND wrote:Tbh fuck you. Some of us need overtime to get ahead.
I think, and I'm sure Hash will correct me if I'm wrong, the idea is to maximize personal agency wherever possible.
The more I think about it the better a low number of long days would be

You tell them that's the good Christian thing to do, work is grace, idle hands are the devil's workshop, etc.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:You could always keep people in line by convincing them they ought to push pipe 6 days a week, 12 hours a day in order to survive.TheReal_ND wrote:No not really actually. That's a fair point. Another is that their immigrant population is actually already used to getting something for nothing. That's one of the methods they are kept in line with.MilSpecs wrote:

That's already happening. CoL is so out of control I make probably triple what my dad did at my age and I'm not providing anything more to my family than he did. In fact, he had been a homeowner for probably a decade by the time he was my age while I'm struggling to get into that bullshit right nowGrumpyCatFace wrote:It will be very easy to fathom, soon. What would constitute a "meager lifestyle"?
1. Multi-unit cubical or pod living which included utilities, a la Japanese tube hotels
2. Cheap data plan, mostly using Wifi
3. Government provided healthcare
4. Cheap clothes
5. Cheap food
6. Public transportation, better multi-passenger Uber, better yet multi-passenger self-driving cars
7. Cheap sports/entertainment
8. Gaming console
9. Cheap dope
10. ???
Of course, families with children would have different but similar requirements

Is this what you envision as the basic minimum lifestyle for Americans on the bottom rung?Martin Hash wrote:What would constitute a "meager lifestyle"?
