Now, admitttedly, my wife lives in an Ivory Tower, but she sits on the board of directors at our local hospital, so I asked her what class the line workers there were in; "upper-middle-lower"? She says "middle".

So I asked her where she thought the lower classes worked in town, she says "for the Bikers" . I asked her what does she think they do for a living? She says "criminals". Then I asked who she thinks makes more money net take home in cash, the hospital worker, or the Bikers? "The Bikers".

Truth is, the lower classes in Canada are actually rolling with a lot of tax free cash, because they are in the Illicit drug trade. The lower classes wouldn't be caught dead working in a cafetaria, the lower classes don't work for the Man, they're entrepreneurs, because they have to be.

If you're working a $20/hr honest job down at the hospital? You're middle class, the lower classes would never be able to get those jobs, they're too marginalized, they have convictions on their sheets, hosptial would never hire them.

Like I said, Doc Y ain't never gonna meet the lower classes, until it is in the context of a home invasion.

So you are proposing that there are only middle class and criminals - who are richer than the middle class.

You just deleted an entire class.

There's an upper class, but it's also tiny compared to the middle class, same as the lower class is, we're 80% middle class, 10% upper, 10% lower.

Or maybe Smitty is saying that unless I know people who are lower class personally I am not entitled to refer to them at all.

I must abstain from any discussion on the topic unless some of my homies are from the lower class.

But because Smitty got roughed up by the boys in his hood - he has the jurisdiction to pass judgement on the matter.

Maybe that's it.

I was middle class, I went to school, I had a job, my parents worked for the gubment, I didn't roll in the ghetto for the money, I was just slummin' for the action, I was an adrenaline junkie, seeking out danger for its own sake.

That being said, the lower classes did indeed have more cash on hand than I did, more than my managerial class father did in fact, lower class is high risk, but there's plenty of cash floating around therein.

It's like, I knew this hooker, and she was most definitely lower class, she came from some mining town up north, she had a drug problem, she was into the blow, and she had a criminal record, so she couldn't get an honest job, but she was smoking hot, and so she made $500 a night, on a good night, $1000, probably about $250,000 a year, she blew a lot of that on coke, but she was lower class after all, that's how they roll.

So you're telling me that there are no poor people in Canada...

Welp, here I come!

In Canada, if you're not a refugee, or a foriegn worker, or a Native, and so not actually Canadian at all, you pretty much have to make an effort to be poor, drug problem, criminal record, and/or some mental health issue therein.

Fact is, even if we imposed a champagne socialist dictatorship, the poor would still be poor, governance doesn't actually effect class that much, there were plenty of poor people in the Soviet Union after all, Marxism never made anybody wealthy.

The main reason why Marxism in Canada can only be Cultural, is that we don't actually have classes in the classical sense, it's all bourgeois middle class as far as the eye can see, the "proletariat" is entirely a fabrication of the Champers Bolshies living up in their Ivory Towers completely out of touch with reality.

Wow, 5 pages before I had time for a good reply.

That'll teach me to end the evening with a post.

There are precious few neighborhoods in the west where people will jump in the river to save one another.
The social fabric is for the most part thin and getting thinner.
People like the man you are talking about in the west are very unlikely to jump in the river for anyone.

I think he was being a bit hyperbolic. It got through to a 13-year old, after all. More relevant would stuff like he would pick us up if we needed a lift to the bus, or help out if we'd have a bike accident or something. I wouldn't want to test the river thing, but wouldn't give too long odds either.

The neighboorhood was rural-ish. 15 min from a city (~50k) but not built as a suburb. Close (bikable) to a more suburby suburb. A lot of the people there grew up in the area, father knew a lot of them from way back. They still meet now and then at my parents'.

I won't get up in the which class are this or that class debate. Having a healthy middle class is awesome, nice that it is holding up!

A lot of naive thinking done on energy, by the left. No questions there. I'd add in regulations for everything as well.

Don't get me wrong, I care for the environment and believe we need to do stuff. But a lot of people go around and act like it is a little bitty thing, and that the boring energy-generating-dirty-stuff isn't really that important. They really need to get how important energy is to society. And possibly that a high cost actually means sacrificing important stuff for people, not saying big words in speeches.

(For heating, we can trade convenience and particulate emissions for CO2 via wood stoves, tho).
