Now the claim is that since I forgot socks, it's the same. Note for the record that the night before, I said, "we are really low on socks and need to stop on our way."

Yes, not only the same as forgetting, but also equivalent to forgetting the tent poles.
Also, one can not easily have too many socks but one can easily have too many tents.

If you want to eat a lot of food for cheap, you can't go wrong with going slav. Communist economy was hard times, so a lot of it is mostly rice and making the most of not having a lot. You can substitute the rice in the Plov with Kasha, but in the US you have to buy that from a jewish food company usually and it costs way more than buckwheat porridge should.

That doubly satisfying moment when you open the crock pot after 8 hours to see if the meat has fallen off the bone.....

.... and then realize how pissed off kitten is going to be when he figures it out.

Is it a bad idea to add parsnips to chicken and pears?

Cubed chicken breasts
Cubed pears
Chopped green onions
Two lemons (peels grated) and the juice squeezed
Sea salt
Lemon pepper seasoning

Parsnips??

Not if you bear in mind they take longer to cook than chicken. Soften the parsnips with the onions in butter for 5 mins before adding the chicken. Longer if the chicken is diced too small. Pears in last.
Alternatively you can grate the parsnip instead of dicing it and it will virtually disolve into the liquid.

It's already done now. I just cut the parsnips into smaller, thinner slices to cook faster, the chicken in larger pieces, and the pears in quarters.

Damn. Parsnips actually go pretty well with chicken and pears.

Curried parsnip soup works well. Something like this one from Delia..
